Best Practices Deploying Apple Devices
Apple devices can transform your organization and how your employees and students work. They can significantly boost productivity and give your employees and students the freedom and flexibility to work in new ways, whether in the classroom, the office, or on the go. Embracing this new way of working leads to benefits across the entire organization. Users have better access to information, so they feel empowered and are able to creatively solve problems. By supporting macOS and iOS, IT departments are viewed as solving real-world problems, rather than fixing technology and cost-cutting. Ultimately everyone benefits.

What's next? A look into the crystal ball of managing macOS devices
Managing Apple devices has changed dramatically in the last few years. We have moved from Open Directory and MCX to MDM and DEP over a relatively short period. With technologies such as secure boot and the obsoletion of traditional imaging workflows, the role of the Mac admin is changing faster than ever.
Whilst these changes are undeniably making macOS more secure, the area that we can Apple is allowing us to manage is becoming narrower.
We will dive into some areas that endpoint engineers will need to become familiar with to continue providing their users with the computing experience they need - from provisioning and configuring devices, to ensuring users aren't impeded whilst maintaining a good security posture.

When considering a device management solution, security and privacy can no longer be an afterthought, or something that is "sprinkled on top" of an existing company or product.

In this session, Zack Blum, CEO and co-founder at Fleetsmith, and Frank Yang, Product Manager at Fleetsmith, will explain how Mac admins can become security heroes, why not proactively securing your fleet is a bad idea, how attackers think about compromising your organization through your employees' endpoints, and examples of best practices including:

  • Secure zero-touch deployment
  • Instant fleet-wide macOS upgrades
  • Automatic FileVault with key escrow
  • Secure Google Chrome configuration
  • Binary blacklisting via Google Santa
  • Fast client-side deployment of fleet-wide log aggregation with Filebeat (ELK stack)
  • Advanced configuration management with Puppet and Chef
  • Managing custom scripts
  • and more!

They'll also touch on how to evaluate a device management vendor's product and corporate security, which are often overlooked but critical to understand.

Imaging workflows using MDM without JAMF
macOS High Sierra security features like secureToken and User-Approved Kernel Extensions can hamper an admin's workflow when imaging and deploying a Mac. If you're using an MDM vendor that does not keep up-to-date with Apple releases, your existing setup may unexpectedly break if you're automating the creation of user accounts or configuring additional settings. Automation through scripts and small apps is an everyday part of most admins' days. Running this automation, for many, comes with the extra overhead of maintaining systems to run it.
